Female Nude

Daguerreotype, stereo, with applied colouring
George Eastman Museum
Courtesy of George Eastman House, Rochester, NY.

The first color photographs were black-and-white images that had the color applied by hand. This erotic image, part of a brisk underground trade in "artist's studies," is an outstanding example of what could be accomplished. Most were more crudely done, lacking the attention to detail that the colorist lavished upon this daguerreotype.
