Stone Wall, Rear of Fredericksburg, with Rebel Dead

In this view we are confronted with the bloody face of a dead soldier, lying on his back in a shallow ditch, next to his rifle. Our sight line leads us down the ditch of crumpled, dead soldiers, compositionally reinforced by a parallel stone wall as far as we can see, suggesting an endless line of wrecked manhood.
