Caption continues: [This view] shows a dead rebel soldier who must have died instantly, his left temple and part of the head was carried away by a shell or solid shot, his blanket is across his breast, tied up in the usual way, and his musket by his side, his rations lay scattered all around him. Half way up the side of the embankment is a foot passage and the bottom of the trench contains about two feet of water; our Union soldiers had to charge across these works.
