As a medium he was one of the major figures in the spiritualist movement in the U.S., England, Europe. He had significant connections with very many of the literary, intellectual, political and royal figures of the period. He was "adopted" by Mrs. Lyon, a wealthy widow, who endowed him with a fortune if he took her name, and he is here identified in pencil on the recto as "D. Home Lyon."
