Photograph of a garden in Jalalabad. There is a group of Afghan soldiers gathered in the foreground, wearing loose clothes and turbans and some holding guns. There is a rectangular pond behind, lined by trees on both sides. A soldier is standing beside a tree to the left. The rest of the garden is filled with trees and there is a stone wall in the distance. The photographer John Burke travelled with the Peshawar Valley Field Force during the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878-80), one of a series of conflicts between Britain and Russia over control of Afghanistan. His images from the war capture landscapes, key strategic sites and people involved in the conflict.

From the collection of King Edward VII when Prince of Wales
