Photograph of Afghan prisoners escorted by the 45th Sikh Regiment. Three Afghan men are sitting on the ground wearing loose robes and caps. Standing and sitting around them is a large group of Sikh soldiers wearing military uniform and turbans. Among the soldiers are groups of guns stacked upwards against each other. There is a mountain behind with a small stone building at the top. The photographer John Burke travelled with the Peshawar Valley Field Force during the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878-80), one of a series of conflicts between Britain and Russia over control of Afghanistan. His images from the war capture landscapes, key strategic sites and people involved in the conflict.
