She has all the suffering of mankind in her but all the perseverance too. A restraint and a strange courage. You can see anything you want to in her. She is immortal." The success of this image overshadowed Lange's other accomplishments, especially her humanizing of compositional formalism in a documentary style that was used in other projects with Paul Taylor such as An American Exodus: A Road of Human Erosion (1939).
