(Ron Coddington, 20 July 2022) On May 21, 1867, Christian C. Musselman received U.S. Patent No. 64,998 for the invention pictured here, a "combined press for cheese and for other purposes." The "other purposes," according to the official description of the invention, includes wringing wet clothes, mashing fruit, pressing lard, and stuffing sausage." The hand crank, shown on the left, requires little power and therefore is useful to the busy farmer with various tasks to perform.

Musselman (1826-1887), a lifelong resident of Somerset County, Pa., worked as a shoemaker's apprentice, teacher, and farmer. In 1863 and 1864, county voters sent him to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives.
