A tintype copy of a portrait of two women

Tintype, cased
The Indiana Album Inc.
Collection name: Arnold Family Collection, Catalog Number: ia-0145-0097

2 3/4 x 3 1/4 in. cased copy tintype of two women. Stamped on the edge of the thicker tintype plate is "MELAINOTYPE PLATE / FOR NEFF'S PAT 19 FEB 56." When removed from the brass matt, it is clear that this is a copy of an older photograph, either a daguerreotype or more likely another tintype, based on the visible edges of the earlier photograph and a tack or nail in the lower right corner that held the photo in placed while it was copied. The image has been hand-colored with slightly pink cheeks and gold on the rings and brooch or locket. The copy tintype dates from ca. 1856-1858.
