Photograph of a cracked edge at the Kimberley Mine. In the foreground there is a rock ledge with deep cracks across its surface. There is heavy machinery lining the far edge of the mine, used to haul up excavated material. The Kimberley Mine was a major diamond excavation site in Griqualand-West, a British colony in southern Africa. A large town was established nearby to accommodate the mass immigration of workers.
