A wonderful view that was produced during the same period as Currier & Ives's celebrated lithographs and recalls the playful, folksy iconography of this well-known American firm. The picture was apparently taken near a school house given the overall well-dressed appearance of the children. The location of this idealized rural view, replete with split rail fences and well-maintained outbuildings, may be the Amish region of Pennsylvania since a "hex" sign appears on the barn in the background.
