In 1952 Otto Steinert organized an exchange between three French photographers (Gilbert Champenois, Jean Boucher and Claude Michaélides) and three German photographers to study in Saarbrücken and Paris for a year respectively. During his time in Saarbrücken Gilbert Champenois experimented with the luminogram, photogram, macro photography, photomontage and the negative print and applied aspects of subjective photography to his work. The image offered here was used for the dustjacket cover of Otto Steinert's "Subjektive Fotografie 2" book published in 1955. Only one other known print of this image is in a private French collection.
