The 1930s saw Kimura assume a highly visible role in Japanese photography. Closely associated with his Leica camera, Kimura''s sensibility of "snapshot spontaneity," and his proclivity for photographing the informal aspects of Japanese life were suited to the camera''s format. Primarily working as a photojournalist during and after WWII, Kimura won continued acclaim and multiple prestigious prizes late in his life.
