Photograph of mules by the banks of the Quesnel river during a break from their journey to the Cariboo gold mines in British Columbia. A large amount of baggage that the mules had been carrying, can be seen on the banks of the river in front of which is a barge boat, used to transport the goods across the water. Guide ropes are suspended above the river.
During the early 1860's, gold was discovered in the Quesnel river's middle basin and the town of Quesnel, provided supplies and lodgings for those following the gold mining trails that were a part of the Cariboo gold rush during the middle of the 19th century.
