National Museum of Romanian History This photograph was used as the basis of an oil painting by G.P.A. Healy "Princess Elisabeth with Princess Marioara" that hangs in Peles Castle. When Princess Maria of Romania (1870-1874) died of scarlet fever on 9 April 1874 it was a devastating loss for her parents King Carol I of Romania and his wife, Elisabeth of Wied. The happy facial expression of Elisabeth in the photograph has changed to one of intense sadness in the oil painting.
