Photograph of a Zulu man wearing courting dress, the traditional clothing worn for a proposal. He is standing facing partly left holding a knobkierie, a type of southern African round-ended club, in his right hand and an animal hide shield in his left. He is wearing a fur loincloth, a headdress and jewellery. White stripes are painted across his face and there is a painted backdrop of a forest behind him. This photograph was taken during the Anglo-Zulu War (1879), which ended the independence of the Zulu Kingdom and brought it under British control.
