For his latest series, Thomas Ruff edited photographs from historical photo archives of the 1850s photographs of Linnaeus Tripe, whose source of inspiration were architectural and topographical images of monuments in India and Burma.
Thomas Ruff was born on 10 February 1958 in Zell am Harmersbach and is a German photo artist of the Düsseldorf School. From 1977 to 1985 he studied photography with Bernd and Hilla Becher at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf.
Tripe has watercolored clouds on his negatives to make the composition seem more alive. By digitally enlarging and overlaying the old negatives with positives, Ruff has created a new, painterly variant of his exploration of the artistic means of photography.
There are six works in a small edition of 30 copies and three works with a slightly higher edition of 50.
