Photograph of a mortar in the Malakoff fortress. The walls of the fortress are reinforced with sandbags and wicker fencing and the mortar is to the right. The ground is covered by wicker fencing and other debris and there is a man standing to the left. After an eleven month siege the city of Sevastopol was captured by the allied British, French and Turkish forces on 8th September 1855. Lefevre photographed a number of strategic fortresses shortly after they had been abandoned by the Russians.
