H. Lichtenecker 1931 Taking facial casts, Southwest Africa (Namibia)
Film negative Private collection of Wolfgang Wiggers (Alan Griffiths, 28 August 2020) This photograph was taken by H. Lichtenecker who went to what is now Namibia, but then under British control as the South African League of Nations mandate, to document local peoples. He was an artist and a self-appointed anthropologist. Coming from Germany his work was influenced by Nazi racial stereotypes and a belief in Aryan superiority. He work with taking facial masks should be viewed in this context.
