Damage to the "Rokeby Venus" by Diego Velezquez (1651)

Black and white image
The National Gallery, London
Rights holder and location of this photograph requested.

The day after Suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst was arrested Mary Richardson attacked the oil painting of the "Rokeby Venus" in the National Gallery in London with a meat cleaver. She was sent to prison for six months. The breaks visible in this photograph, above her shoulder and vertically across the upper left of the image, were to the glass and not the canvas.
