An early work by Ulmann, who was a graduate of the Ethical Culture School and Columbia University, Teacher's College, where she met and studied with photographer Clarence H. White, a founding member of the Photo-Secession. White's Pictorialist approach profoundly influenced Ulmann, who is known for her humanist portraits of African-Americans.
