Auction: 3080B, American Furniture & Decorative Arts, 3 March, 2018, Lot: 315

Atkinson Academy was founded in 1787 as an all-boys school, but began admitting girls in 1791. The original building constructed in 1789 was destroyed by fire in 1802 and was rebuilt in 1803. It is considered to be the oldest standing coeducational school in the United States. This image is thought to be the earliest known photograph of the school.
