Photograph of the village of Kutakushta in the Khyber Pass. Two men wearing turbans and carrying guns are standing on a large rock in the foreground. In the valley behind there are several ruined buildings and a small tower. There is a man standing at the top of the tower and three people standing in the building which is farthest away. There are steep mountains behind. The photographer John Burke travelled with the Peshawar Valley Field Force during the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878-80), one of a series of conflicts between Britain and Russia over control of Afghanistan. His images from the war capture landscapes, key strategic sites and soldiers involved in the conflict.
