Partnership of Samuel Bourne (1834-1912) and Charles Shepherd. The exact date the partnership started is not clear but it seems to have been in the late 1860s. By 1870 Bourne & Shepherd were operating from Simla and Calcutta and a Bombay branch was opened about 1876.
The Bourne & Shepherd Company was purchased by Colin Murray sometime in the early 1870s. Murray added much of his own work to the existing B& S catalog and continued the company well into the 20th century. Bourne & Shepherd photographers visited Ceylon ca. 1872 and added a series of views to their catalogue.
The studio on SN Bannerjee Road on the Esplanade (now Dharmatala) area of Calcutta (Kolkata) continued despite a fire in 1991 that destroyed much of the historic legacy of the company. On 15 May 2016 the studio finally closed after being in business for 176 years.
