An amateur photographer who took a group of 137 Daguerreotypes of Italy in 1841 with the intention of publishing a book in twenty monthly parts. He was assisted in this by Achille Morelli and Lorenzo Suscipj. The book was due to commence on 1 January 1845 but was abandoned. The plates are held by the National Media Museum at Bradford in the UK.
 
He is better known for his work in mathematics, music, pronunciation and philology. He was acknowledged by George Bernard Shaw to be the prototype of Professor Henry Higgins of the play Pygmalion (1913) which later became the film My Fair Lady (1956).
