Graduated from the Mühendishane-i Berri-i Hümayun in Istanbul (1866) and becames a teacher of painting and photography at the same school. Joined the Ottoman army and at the palace became a teacher of photography to Prince Burhaneddin Efendi. He became an aide to Abdülhamid II (1889) and accompanied German Emperor Wilhelm II on his travels through the Ottoman Empire from Istanbul to Jerusalem. He later returned to teaching painting at the Trabzon High School in Istanbul.
