Bastienne Schmidt

Bastienne Schmidt is a mixed-media artist who works with photography, large-scale drawings and painting. She was born in Germany, raised in Greece and Italy and has lived in New York and Bridgehampton for the past 20 years. Her photographs are included in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, the International Center of Photography, the Brooklyn Museum in New York, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Biblioteque Nationale in Paris, among many others. Her work has been shown nationally and internationally in over 70 exhibitions. Her first book project, Vivir la Muerte, was shown in a one-person exhibition at the International Center of Photography in 1997. It won the Kodak Prize for Best Photo Documentary Project in Stuttgart, Germany. In 1998, she received (with the photographer Philippe Cheng) a joint grant by the Open Society Institute to photograph the culture of death and dying in America. She has published five monographs, among them Vivir la Muerte (Edition Stemmle,1995), American Dreams (Edition Stemmle, 1996), Shadow Home (Jovis, 2005) Home Stills (Jovis, 2010) and Topography of Quiet ( Jovis,2013). The book Shadow Home was awarded the Best Photo Book prize in Germany in 2005 and was shown at the Museum fur Kunst und Gewerbe in Hamburg, Germany. Her project Home Stills depicts an ironic view on female gender roles. It was shown in a one-person exhibition at the Southeast Museum of Photography in Florida and the Manege Museum in St.Petersburg, Russia.
