Starting out as an apprentice with the Abdullah frères, Bogos Tarkulyan opened his first studio in Constantinople in 1882 and by the mid-1890s Atelier Phébus on Rue de Pera (present day Istiklal) was recognized as one of the most prominent in the city. Tarkulyan was also a portrait painter and photographed a number of artists in the city. Some of his photographs were included in the Abdülhamid II collection sent to the US Library of Congress. Commissioned as an imperial court photographer in the late 1890s, he went on to be appointed an official photographer to Kemal Ataturk. Images of Ataturk used on the new republic's bank notes were based on photographs by Tarkulyan.
