He started as a watercolour painter and in 1884 started work as an illustrator for the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). He was promoted to be chief of the USGS illustrations section (1889) and oversaw the workflow of illustrations for publication. At around this time he took up photography an interest and profession he continued until his retirement at the age of 73. Photographing for the Smithsonian's Bureau of American Ethnology (BAE) he took a large number of portraits of native Americans and he accompanied anthropological expeditions to Virginia, Arizona, New Mexico and northwestern Mexico.
