Appointed by the Jewish Council as official photographer to the Statistics Department to document life in the Lodz Ghetto in Poland during the Second World War (1940-1945). In 1944 just before the ghetto was closed he buried the negatives returning after the war to retrieve 6,000 negatives of which around 3,000 survived.
