Johnston was a remarkable man, fulfilling the roles of President, Curator and main architect of the RPS Collection, as well as being a highly respected pictorial photographer in his own right. He was a link between photographers of all countries and all persuasions, a visionary and a man with a passion for research and for dissemination of information.
