He was commissioned in the early 1870s (?) by the British governor and the Colonial Office in London to document buildings and places in Freetown, Sierra Leone. Examples of his work are included in the Carl Passavant Red Album held at the Basel Ethnographic Museum (Museum der Kulturen).
