British photojournalist and documentary filmmaker. His photographs showing a gritty Britain in industrial decline are iconic pictures of the 1960s and 1970s. After studying at engineering at Cambridge he transitioned into full time photography working with the Daily Express, and the Sunday Times which was innovating with full colour Sunday supplements. One of his photographs shared the first Colour Supplement cover with a photograph by David Bailey. These magazines were important in spreading the acceptance of the use of colour for documentary photography.
