In 1848 he acquired a Daguerreotype set from Holland via a Nagasaki merchant, Ueno Toshinojo. As he was became the ruler of the Satsuma domain in southern Kyuhu in 1851 he was in a position to encourage others to study the process. Several early images, including one of Tsurumaru Castle (Kagoshima) have been attributed to this photographer.
