One of Thomsen's most notable contributions to photography was his documentation of Ivigtut, a small settlement in southern Greenland known for its cryolite mine. The Ivigtut mine, active during Thomsen’s time there from 1866 to 1871, was a key source of cryolite, a mineral essential for the production of aluminum. The photographs that Thomsen took during this period offer rare visual insights into the mining operations, the engineers who worked there, and the surrounding landscapes. His stereoscopic images, such as those of engineers at the cryolite mine, are particularly valued for their technical precision and artistic composition.
