A native of Edinburgh, Scoland, he served as Smithsonian Official Photographer (1871-1917) and Honorary Custodian of the Section of Photography (1896-1917) at the Smithsonian Institution (Washington, USA) where he remained for nearly 50 years. He took photographs of significant items within the collections as a visual record often as cyanotypes. In 1913 he mounted an exhibition of photographs to show the advances within photography and its importance in documentation.
