A photographer in a rural area what is now the the Republic of Moldova. Filmmaker Victor Galusca found a collection of around 4,000 negatives in an abandoned building and appreciated their regional significance for the region when it was part of the Soviet Union. During the 1950s and 1970s Zaharia Cusnir took photographs of weddings, deaths, local festivals and portraits. On occasion the portraits have a black cloth, a table cloth or some other fabric behind the sitter and they have been taken as the basis for mandatory identity cards.
