He reportedly apprenticed with Silas Holmes in New York City in 1850, then remained with Holmes "a number of years." He was also later in charge of Meade Brothers gallery in New York City. He opened a gallery in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1863. His gallery was later listed at 308 West Fourth Street. His gallery was purchased in 1898 by F.M. Somers, who issued a catalog of more than 500 portraits of celebrities taken by Landy during his career.
