Photograph of a burning ghat by the Ganges. In the foreground there are stone steps leading down to the river. Behind are the ornately carved stone towers of a temple.

This is one of a series of photographs from a published volume documenting the tour the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII, made of India in 1875-76. Several of these burning ghats, used for cremations, are located along the banks of the sacred Ganges river.
