Andreas Feininger
1936
Book cover for Andreas Feininger "Stockholm" (Albert Bonnier, 1936)

Book cover
Stockholms Auktionsverk
Photographica, 4 April 2011, Lot: 4360

Edition was intended to reach 10.000 copies but only 5.000 were printed. The greater part of the edition was impounded and destroyed for security reasons by the Swedish authorities three years before the start of the World War II since the book contained aerial photographs and views of Stockholm. Feininger was also the designer of the books, trained at the Bauhaus.

Andreas Feininger lived in Stockholm for a few years and wandered around with his Bentzin Spiegelreflex and Rolliflex at all times of day or night in order to capture the photographic portrait of Stockholm.

"If one is standing high up on a bridge, a rock or tower, then one must also look downwards; and if one is standing down below in the canon of a street one must from time to time cast a glance upwards and measure the height of the houses and the sky." The book is perhaps the most beautiful and most interesting of all photographic volumes of Stockholm ever since.
