The Roman city of Pompeii was rediscovered in the eighteenth century and, sadly, the initial excavations amounted to little more than looting - many of the sculptures and wall paintings were carried off to private collections. Graham has made a serious study of both famous and lesser buildings. This photograph focuses on a shop, probably selling food, with the containers set into the counter. Here the compatibility between the ancient stone and the coarse calotype process results in a satisfying visual effect.
