Christopher Wahren Fine Photographs Cyanotype print, probably unique, of Egyptian rock inscriptions, photograph by J. Couyat from the expedition to Ouâdi Hammâmât, Egypt of J. Couyat & P. Montet, 1911. Number 77 visible in the image.
Ouâdi Hammâmât is a remote location in Egypt to which the Frenchmen Couyat and Montet made the first photographic expedition in 1911. A very limited number of cyanotypes were produced on site during the expedition. This image very likely represents the first print of the first photograph ever taken of its millennia-old subject.
