Photograph of the Mosque of Aurangzeb, Benares. The mosque is close to the river and has two minarets. There are crowds of people lining the banks of the river to either side, and a large pile of sticks have been loaded onto a boat in the water.
 
This is one of a series of photographs from a published volume documenting the tour the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII, made of India in 1875-76. The Mosque of Aurangzeb, now known as the Gyanvapi Mosque, is on the banks of the River Ganges in the city of Benares. Benares is more commonly known as Varanasi and is of great religious significance to Hinduism.
