Since the Middle Ages universities had their own independent jurisdiction and their own jails. All students and staff were subject to this jurisdiction. The image offered here shows one of the oldest preserved student karzers in Germany in Heidelberg, famous for its excessive graffiti. It was still used until the early part of the 20th century.
