There is a man sitting on a wooden barrel facing right just in front of the cross. There is a muddy ditch in the foreground to the right and grassland beyond the walls of the memorial. Napoléon, Prince Imperial of the French served with the British army during the Anglo-Zulu War. He was killed in a skirmish with Zulu fighters in June 1879. Shortly afterwards his godmother Queen Victoria ordered a memorial to be built on the site of his death.
