French photographer who in November 1854 took out a patent for carte-de-visite. His system produced a negative that could take multiple images thus producing a cheaper version of the carte de visite and ensuring its tremendous popularity. He also took photographs of the rebellion of the Paris Commune in 1871.
 
Common error
 
Beware of the following:
 
"Most certainly Disdéri's status as a photographer was greatly enhanced when in May 1859 he had the good fortune of being in the right place at the right time as Napoleon III interrupted his march to war to pose for a photograph in Disdéri's studio." (Wikipedia, Aug 28, 2007)
 
Whilst this makes an interesting story there appears to be no factual basis for it.
