A medical doctor who was interested in the relatively new science of neurophysiology and used photographs to illustrate his findings. By electrocuting the muscles of volunteers he found he could simulate the different facial emotions, for example pain or joy. In 1862 his findings were published in an album ‘Mécanisme de la physionomie humaine, ou analyse électrophysiologique des passions‘. He lectured at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris which houses a major collection of his work.
