The table was the anchor of the portrait. It provided a resting place for a steadying hand, a surface for a top hat, or a display for a Bible or vase. This theme looks at the variety of "occasional tables"—often elaborately carved or covered in Turkish rugs—that bridged the gap between the sitter and the camera.
