Direct light creates harsh shadows; the reflector softens them. This theme looks at the technical apparatus—often large white screens or mirrors on adjustable frames—used by the operator to bounce light into the shadows of a face, sculpting the features and creating the "Rembrandt" effect prized by the masters.
