American printer, photographer and inventor. He was interested in printing techniques and the inventor of the halftone engraving process that revolutionized the printing of illustrations in magazines and newspapers. In 1888 he demonstrated the first practical means of projecting three diapositives on a screen and in 1892 he patented a 3-color camera. By 1894 he had modified his designs and patented the photochromoscope. He made many inventions that were important in printing, color photography and motion pictures but failed to patent most of them meaning that he never profited out of his inventions.
In 1996 he was the subject of a 32 cent U.S. stamp.
